Quickie personal observation:

Someone once said, "don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see." That applies to the news media in spades. Case in point; whenever there is a moderate earthquake in California, the rest of the country is led to believe that the entire state is ready to fall into the ocean.

Someone else once said, "a picture is worth a thousand words." Case in point; during the height of the riots in Jakarta my local paper carried a photo by the Associated Press (AP) showing Indonesians lined up in front of automatic teller machines to withdraw money.

The good sized photo showed approximately 100 people lined up waiting their turn at the machine. Everyone that could be seen at the forefront of the photo was neatly dressed, well groomed and totally relaxed. Looking at the expressions on their faces, some were smiling, a few were laughing, but mostly they looked bored. This at the height of the riots. To me, this looked like a scene from any major city in the USA.

But to hear the news reports, it's the end of the world. My assessment is BS. I may be wrong, but I prefer to believe what I see to what I hear.
