Hi, Dragonfly. Information in my post is derived mainly from articles in Wall Street Journal and Barron's.
1. I've read from at least three sources that Iridium phones will have trouble working in cities, because buildings block transmission. I tend to trust independent journalists better than company PR.
2. Fully equipped entry-level PC costs about 800 dollars. 3x800=2'400. According to WSJ, Iridium phone will cost "close to 3'000 dollars". The price of average PC has little to do with my comment of Iridium phone costing three times as much as a PC.
3. According to various estimates, Iridium will need at least
500 000 customers to turn profit. Those numbers mean that the consortium will need to expand the sales beyond Hollywood agents and Silicon Valley CEO's. They need customers willing to buy both a regular mobile phone for daily use and a satellite phone for travel. Where's the market? The fact that Iridium consortium was bickering about advertising strategies this spring shows that they are also wondering.
