TOKYO (Nikkei)-Japanese makers of microchip manufacturing
equipment saw total orders, domestic and overseas, decline 42.1% year
on year to 66,696 million yen in April, the fifth consecutive month of
annual decline, the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan
(SEAJ) reported Tuesday.

Demand from domestic chipmakers as well as from South Korean
manufacturers remained sluggish, while demand from U.S. and
Taiwanese producers slowed, the industry body said.

Orders will likely remain at low levels for now, as many Japanese
chip-makers are planning to curtail capital investment in fiscal 1998,
according to SEAJ.

Total orders in the Japanese market, including imports, fell 41.9% to
41,429 million yen in April, representing the fourth straight month of a
40% or larger decline.

Sales in Japan, however, rose 10.2% to 42,041 million yen.
