RESEARCH ALERT-Telecom equipment deals to continue

NEW YORK, June 16 (Reuters) - FAC Equities sees additional mergers in the telecommunications equipment sector, following the most recent agreement by
Northern Telecom Ltd. (NTL.TO - news) to buy Bay Networks Inc. (BAY - news).

-- said mergers will continue as traditional telecom equipment providers seek expertise in the data networking market. Data networking companies, meanwhile,
need to expand their reach into the voice side to take advantage of the lucrative telecom carrier market.

-- said long-term survivors will have credible data capabilities, along with voice and multimedia products. The winners will also have strong ties in the telecom
market as well as in the corporate market.

-- said Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND - news) would be a logical acquisition choice for Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU - news).

-- said foreign carriers such as Ericsson (LMEb.ST) and Siemens AG (SIEG.F) may seek to acquire data equipment suppliers to expand product portfolios and get
extend reach into U.S. market.

-- said companies such as Cabletron Systems Inc. (CS - news), FORE Systems Inc. (FORE - news), 3Com Corp. (COMS - news) and Xylan Corp. (XYLN -
news) remain strong acquisition candidates.

Regardless of whether that offer actually occurred, I do not believe that Mory would sell his company for such a low price. However, becoming part of LU has its virtues. It's quite conceivable that LU could increase the sales of ASND's current product line simply through their superior marketing abilities. Heck, a GRF might even slip out the door every now and then. <g> I would agree with you that choosing the right merger partner might be more important than choosing the right price.
