DD, I have seen valuations of companies based on number of unique users hitting the site per month. Like valuing a TV show by its ratings. As you mentioned, the problem with this is programmers and the fact that results can not be verified. As a programmer/engineer, I will state for the record that it is possible to construct a "robot" which would redirect web hits intended for one site very briefly to an alternate site just to collect the hit without either the user or the "host" website knowing about it.

An obvious extension is the ability to collect intelligence on the use of someone's web site. Or to create a file on all the perverts visiting a porno site. The web is not secure.

Something everyone should think about before visiting a porn site: Most web servers collect the address of each hit and store it in a database. (Now you know how you get on all those mailing lists)

DD:that was a truly profound insight and raises a question I've wondered for some time and that is, "what difference does reported page views really mean?". I use the net frequently but have never bought anything in response to a banner ad.

Thanks,

Timoteo

How dare he devalue my vote!
I voted for Hank, and I knew who he was when I did it.

Jeesh, now that I read the article again I'll have to say,
they are DESPERATE for page fillers, aren't they?
