FOCUS-Asian shares rally as yen recovers ground

(Updates with more gains, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong closes)

By Chris McCall

SINGAPORE, June 17 (Reuters) - Asian stocks staged strong rallies on Wednesday as the yen
strengthened to 142.3 to the dollar, helping markets claw back ground after hefty falls the previous day.

South Korea had the strongest percentage gain, with the composite index rising above the 300 level to end 8.5 percent higher.

''The yen's rebound helped boost the market, which was about to stage a technical rebound following recent sharp falls,'' said analyst Woo Sang-chul at Tongyang Securities in Seoul.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 6.35 percent, breaching the 8,000 barrier. In India a ban on short selling in a bid to cut short a bear run propelled Bombay stocks more than seven percent upwards at one point.

Shares in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia also posted strong gains in late trade.

S+P future are up 6.5 at 6:02am so we will have a positive opening

Have a good Wednesday
