Thanks for your response. Interesting answers.

1. Those that join because they want to associate with a tribe.

Many secular alternatives to this.

2. Those that feel secure in the illusion of tradition.

I can understand the allure. And it absolves one from having to think. I admit that I do enjoy certain religious trappings and traditions such as the pagan pageantry of Christmas, some great classical church music, etc.

3. Those that join because of fear of the unknown (primarily death).

I think you've hit a key one here. Grasping a belief system that promises life after death, however irrational, can be a powerful lure for many.

4. Those that join because they want to assume some sort of tribal leadership and control over others. (These individuals are truly despicable.)

I agree. Scum of the scum (shudder).

5. Those that belong simply because of conditioning almost since birth.

It's a good thing that some people resist conditioning better than others. Perhaps humans are divided into two sub-species, reason dominant and faith dominant. I wonder if evolution will allow coexistence indefinitely? <VBG>
