This is not like C++ getting compiled to into native executable code. This is like ancient Pascal compilers producing P-code.

I'm unfamiliar with the details of P-code, but I suspect there was some sort of P-machine. Had someone created a chip with a P-machine native instruction set, then it would be the same thing as C++ getting compiled into native executable code.

Similarly, Sun and others (Patriot Scientific, I believe) have come out with hardware chips which run Java byte code in native form.
