You have to use basic HTML commands for bold and italic. Since they don't work in the message header, you should see them when you list all the messages on the thread,

can you tell me how to make the font bold or italic on this thing.

Enclose text between < i > and < / i > (omitting the spaces inside the brackets), and the text will be italic. The brackets won't show.
