AT&T, America Online Shares Rise in Europe on Merger Report Bloomberg News June 17, 1998, 3:08 a.m. PT AT&T, America Online Shares Rise in Europe on Merger Report London, June 17 (Bloomberg) -- America Online Inc.'s shares rose in Europe after the Financial Times newspaper said the world's leading Internet service provider rejected a takeover bid by AT&T Corp. AT&T shares rose as much as 1/4 to 62 1/4 and AOL shares rose 2 1/2 to 91 1/2, according to Madoff Securities International Ltd. in London. Officials at the two companies could not immediately be reached for comment. I read/heard somewhere the offer was around $140/shr. S.

Won't be the last time someone tries to grab AOL. The fact that ATT was willing to pay a large premium only bolsters the case for AOL. Was it the correct move for shareholders? I'm not sure. ATT could provide interesting synergies yet none that AOL "must" have. Financing and venture capital is not really an issue. ATT may have been bogged down by ATT megamanagement. AOL can do it alone.
