I've said this before but I'll say it again, videoconferencing may yet be the killer app that drives ATM. Gartner just published their annual videoconferencing report and stated the following:

1) Access technologies will shift from circuit-switched to IP/ATM by 2001. IP/ATM will supplant circuit-switched networks as the preferred method for transporting audio and video.

2) all their clients are rapidly upgrading their backbones NOW.

3) strongly recommend that all their clients assume and plan for both circuit-switched as well as IP/ATM through 2000 and ATM thereafter.

Sorry for the synopsis as opposed to linking or pasting the actual report. Gartner is a paid service (6 figures!) and I'm sure they would hunt me down and flog me if I cut and pasted it.
