3Com Will Pilot The Net Without A Browser

By Steven Burke, Computer Reseller News
3Com's Palm Computing is planning to unveil by year's end a new version of the PalmPilot that lets users easily download information from the Internet without a browser.

Corporate IT managers convene June 16 to 18 at New York's Jacob Javits center to scope out the latest products and vendor strategies in enterprise computing.

"Browsing doesn't have to be the only metaphor for how people extract information from the Internet," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development for 3Com's Palm Computing.

Bercow said he could not provide extensive details on the new product because it has not been announced. However, he said, the product will involve a number of alliances. Bercow made the comments at a PC Expo panel session in New York.

"It's architecture, partners, and innovation" that make the new device possible, said Bercow. "There's no magic."

"The technology exists," said Bercow. "You are not going to get 100-megabit [per second] bandwidth. ... There are ways of getting to content that is meaningful and rich and doesn't require a really big pipe. There are ways today with the existing technology using the existing infrastructure, the existing carriers, and service providers to create an out-of-the-box, open-up-the-shrink-wrap-and-it-works [product]. It can be done and it will be done soon."

"There are other ways to get that [Internet] information," said Bercow. "You'll see them from a variety of sources by the year's end that meet with much more approval from consumers."

"There has long been wireless access to the Internet," he continued. "But they are too big and too expensive. They drain too much battery. You have to be the system integrator."

Bercow said resellers will have many opportunities for creating new solutions for the new devices. The PalmPilot has an extensive development environment that is aimed at letting resellers develop software and hardware solutions for it.
