What it means is that Schmidt just executed an end run around MSFT's front line.

MSFT thought that by not following JAVA open industry standards, they would continue to lock in their customers. Intel just announced that at least in the enterprise segment where Novell still holds market share, it is willing to work with a company that maintains industry standards. It also helps that all the other pieces are in place---namely the unmatched speed of the Novell Intel based JVM, the web server from Netscape, the database from Oracle and the commitment to go multiprocessor with Merced.

If this alliance gains any momentum then it may be as important to Novell as the browser initially was to Netscape. Many corporations will now find a Novell NOS a safe choice to use to underpin their entry into the Internet computing environment. Novell now has to address E-Commerce and the Internet needs of its corporate customers with more relevant Internet access products.

This is a far more important announcement than the usual we support you palaver. They signed patent agreements and for all we know there may be the equivalent of a graphics accelerator for Novell's JVM in the works. Now wouldn't that cook Gates goose.

He might have to turn around and backtrack and support the JAVA industry standard. Keep your ears tuned for MSFT's countermove.
