Re: Turkey . . .

Turkey doesn't get too much press in the US, but it deserves more. It is a major ally in a key area. Early in this century Kemal Ataturk brought a backward country into the twentieth century based on the concepts of secular democracy. With the rise of Islamic fundamentalism, Turkey has had challenges to its democratic state. The Turkish Army, which sees itself as the guardian of the secular legacy, recently dictated terms to the Islamic-friendly coalition government that (1) protected secularism but (2) undermined democracy.

You can be pretty sure that the situation in Turkey represents a political extreme, and it doesn't matter to the resistors that these fingerprints are not minutiae-based. They won't cooperate with their opposition on anything that smacks of modernity or can be read to be subject to police or military involvement. I think the Turkish situation could be repeated elsewhere in the Islamic political world, but that's about it.
