OT: re: browser tips

Second way to do it. Paste the link.

One added wrinkle to this. Some people view SI in frames, others not. If your URL at the top reads:

techstocks.com

then you're viewing a frameset. That link will not take anyone else to the correct page. This means that the URL for the individual page that you want to reference, for example:

exchange2000.com

is only for one of the frames in the frameset. So if you want to paste that URL into a message, you first have to open a new window with just that frameset. This is done by right-clicking on the main window (click and hold on a Mac) and choose "New Window with this Frame." Then repeat Doug's instructions for that new window.

(Doug could probably translate this into more user friendly language).

***OT*** To Doug: Much appreciate your taking the time and making the personal effort to help this old bumbler learn new tricks. I'm willing, just not too swift at this stuff. Will follow your detailed directions and try this out. Hey, you folks here may be sorry - lots of stuff may appear to clutter up this fine board. Again thanks. Chaz

Lesson on how to copy and "paste" stuff on computer.

I was just digging through some piles of paper, and found a printout of post # 11596 (from my "early" days on SI), and ... now that I actually am fairly familiar with doing stuff on my computer, I was surprised to see that the copy and paste method explained back then is NOT at all what I typically do, so -- I thought I would give another re-hash to anyone out there who is thinking "Gee, I wonder how these people do that ?"

To copy and paste either text or a "link" (meaning a URL) :

Highlight the stuff to be copied and pasted by pulling cursor (with normal mouse click button depressed the whole time) from beginning to end of section to be copied, (then let go of the mouse click).

Click on "Edit" at top of screen, click on "Copy," then go to wherever you want the text or URL (e.g. -- in an e-mail message, in a reply to an SI post, in the "Location" box on Netscape browser, etc.)

Click your cursor where you want the copy. Click on Edit, then "Paste," and you should be done.

Jon.

(I know us oldtimers have posted this occasionally, but, it has been a while ...)
