I just got back from the PC Expo in New York and got some interesting info. It seems that the person most in charge of software development for IPhone was on sabbatical and just got back a few weeks ago. New versions of IPhone will be released in the coming weeks with an upgrade to come some time in late summer.
I asked him about the possibility of IPhone being release for free like Communicator and IE and while he said it was an interesting idea they have no plans on doing that anytime soon. You may think that it was not a good question but if you think about the fact that VOCLF is gearing towards the higher end user with its Gateway products, you find a similarity to Netscape and Microsoft in that those two gave away their small products in order to create name recognition and professional awareness in the hope of selling larger products with huge margins.
The VOCLF rep. agreed that they are now gearing towards Gateway but admitted that they still get a majority of their revenue from IPhone.
They will continue to support IPone for the PC aggressively but will probably discontinue support for the Apple. His main point was that the leader is now back (I forgot her name.... its not Ganor's wife) and that things are going to start moving again. He stressed, however, that VOCLF is for the long term and we shouldn't be looking for a quick move.
Good Luck All,
Jon
