WOW - Blowout ! Thank you uncle Sam !

If you don't know by now, you live in a closet. The U.S. decided
to intervene in the falling yen and stabilize the Japanese currency.
They bought $2 billion of yen in the open markets driving the ratio
of yen to dollar down as much as 6 yen during the day.

This, along with the rush trip to Japan by Deputy Secretary Summers
provided a big boost to U.S. and world markets.

Within 30 min of the open the Dow was up +100 points and climbing
fast. The market was up +220 before noon with no real sell off over
lunch. The high occurred around 2:30 hitting +227 just before the
normal late day sell off dropping -67 points just before the close.

Almost everything except airlines joined in the rally. Internet
stocks jumped the most after it was disclosed that AOL turned down
an offer from AT&T to buy the company. All the Internet's finished
higher with big gains. AOL +4.88, YHOO +8.69, CNET +10.38, XCIT +8.81
SEEK was the lone ranger posting only a +1.38.

Tomorrow should be another interesting day. Technically we should
see a pullback in the general market as profit taking occurs normally.

There were no real sellers this afternoon and tomorrow will depend
on the Asian markets tonight. Japan is up +616 at 7:PM tonight which
was to be expected. A good follow through by the rest of Asia and
no negative news tonight and we might actually see a positive market
tomorrow as well.

The bias WAS positive for the rest of the week before the intervention.
With triple witching options expiration on Friday and end of quarter
buying for fund manager window dressing next week, we could see 9100
again soon. The -200 Monday took out a lot of the stragglers and with
the 725 million volume today the buyers were out in force.

I have no magic play for tomorrow. We could go either way.

Keep your stops tight to hold on to your profit and we will give
you a complete update in our regular Thursday newsletter.

Plan your trades, execute your plan !

Jim

America Online Inc. (AOL)

Leading U.S. online service provider AMERICA ONLINE has rebuffed a takeover approach by AT&T CORP, London's Financial Times newspaper said. Quoting people close to both companies, the paper said AT&T Chairman Michael Armstrong approached AOL several weeks ago with a tentative offer. One person told the Financial Times that AT&T had been prepared to pay "comfortably above" AOL's market capitalization of $19 billion. But AOL CEO Steve Case and COO Robert Pittman told AT&T several days ago they did not want to sell. (Reuters 02:39 AM ET 06/17/98)

America Online Inc. (AOL)

AT&T CORP's reported interest in buying AMERICA ONLINE INC shows the telecommunications giant is sincere about expanding its Internet presence and is willing to pay for a leading role in that fast-growing market, analysts said. AT&T and AOL declined to comment on the report. "If this (report) is true, it would be a clear indication that AT&T sees the Internet as the future of communications," said Jeffrey Kagan of consultancy Kagan Telecom Associates. "It took them a while to realize that -- that the Internet is the future -- but it shows that they are thinking differently." America Online Inc. (AOL)

AT&T CORP may be interested in buying AMERICA ONLINE INC and its large consumer Internet business, but the telecommunications giant would be wiser providing more lucrative services to corporate customers and international markets, analysts said. "The question is -- is this where they want to spend billions of dollars? Dial-up Internet access assets, while important, might not be the most bang for AT&T's buck," said Scott Wright, a telecommunications analyst with Fahnestock & Co Inc. "AT&T may well be trying to buy AOL, but the question is -- should they be?" said Eric Paulak, a research director with the Gartner Group. "If AT&T is buying this to win a battle they already lost in the consumer market, it doesn't make a lot of sense," Paulak said. Revenue from Cisco's business in China rose 200% last year and was expected to double by the end of 1998, it said, but gave no further details. Duke Energy Corporation (DUK)

DUKE ENERGY said its board adopted a dividend policy that will target 50% of earnings paid out in dividends versus the 65% of earnings presently paid out in dividends. The company said it expects to maintain dividends at the quarterly rate of $0.55 per share until the target payout ratio is reached. The $0.55 per share dividend is payable on Sept. 16 to shareholders of record on Aug. 14. It will also pay quarterly dividends on its preferred stocks on the same schedule. In fact, there is no way they could." Gates said one of the strongest features of Windows 98 is the integration of the Internet browser into the operating software. Gov. Lawton Chiles late Tuesday urged state senators to oppose a national tobacco settlement he says will cost Florida $4 billion in lost revenue. Eight months after landing a $11.3 billion settlement with tobacco companies to offset costs of smoking-related illnesses, Chiles said in a letter that amendments to a federal tobacco deal could strip as much as 35 percent off the state's settlement. Chiles said federal lawmakers, who in June 1997 reached a conceptual agreement with the industry on a national accord, are proposing a $514 billion settlement that funnels money away from states to fund federal priorities. With the tobacco debate entering what may be the final stretch, the Senate narrowly voted on late Tuesday to limit lawyers' fees in tobacco lawsuits, approving a sliding scale of up to $4,000 an hour for attorneys who pioneered the anti-smoking cases. Republican leaders have called a special meeting of their divided party in an attempt to decide once and for all whether to try to pass the bill, kill the bill, or find some kind of parliamentary sleight of hand to make it go away. "It may very well be gone by tomorrow," said Indiana Republican Richard Lugar. "They may stop the train and get off." sonki: WSJ report on Oracle

June 18, 1998

Oracle's Quarterly Net Rose 12%
On Increased Demand for Software
By DON CLARK
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Oracle Corp., riding rebounding demand for its database software and services, topped expectations for profit in its fiscal fourth quarter.

The Redwood Shores, Calif., company said net income for the period ended May 31 rose 12% to $403 million, or 41 cents a diluted share, from $360 million, or 36 cents, in the year-earlier period. Analysts' consensus for the latest period was 38 cents, according to First Call. Oracle's revenue rose 24% to $2.41 billion from $1.95 billion.

Company Profile: Oracle

Oracle, whose dominance in databases parallels Microsoft Corp. in operating systems, has been struggling to reassure investors about that market's health since its fiscal second period, when sales of database-server programs grew just 3% over the year-earlier period. That growth rate rebounded to 13% in its third period, and again grew by 13% in the fourth quarter reported Wednesday.

"The database business has definitely come back and is doing well," said Jeffrey Henley, Oracle's executive vice president and chief financial officer.

A Big Disappointment

But Oracle disclosed a big disappointment in applications programs that work with its databases. That business, which grew 30% in the third period after rising just 7% in the second quarter, actually declined by 1% in the most recent period. "It's been all over the map," Mr. Henley said of Oracle's application business. "We have to do a better job next year."

Oracle released its results after stock markets closed. Its stock closed at $24.3125 on the Nasdaq Stock Market, and in after-hours trading rose to $25.5625, according to Instinet Inc.

Databases, which store business records, are a foundation for software that companies use to manage transactions and internal processes. Besides the software itself, Oracle derives a substantial amount of its revenue from services to help customers install, customize and maintain its programs. That segment is now Oracle's most robust, with revenue swelling 43% to $1.17 billion in the just-ended quarter, while revenue from licensing all software products grew 10% to $1.24 billion.

Coping With a Reorganization

The company, No. 2 in the software market behind rival Microsoft, has been coping with the after-effects of a sales-force reorganization last year and turmoil in some other foreign markets. In Asia, Oracle said sales of its database-server programs fell 29% in the latest period, even worse than the 25% decline reported in the third period. But server revenue in Oracle's Americas unit rose 24%, and grew 15% in Europe.

Business applications are a newer market for Oracle, and one growing faster than databases. But the company faces stiff competition from companies that specialize only in that business, such as Germany's SAP AG and PeopleSoft Inc. of Pleasanton, Calif., and have been growing much faster than Oracle.

Mr. Henley acknowledged that it is Oracle's execution, not overall market demand, that led to the 1% sales decline in the latest quarter. The company recently released some new software in that business that should help the problem, he said, but may take time to take hold.

sonki: Tech Briefs - WSJ - ORCL, Dell, CPQ, IBM etc

Please read. ( Excerpts)
Digits: Gambits & Gadgets
In the World of Technology
Dell Computer Corp., the direct-sales PC powerhouse that forced rivals to lower prices for workstations and servers when it entered those markets, now has an ax aimed at storage systems. At PC Expo in New York this week, Dell for the first time showed large-scale data storage products, resulting from a new relationship with storage veteran Data General Corp. The low-cost company adopted a sleek black design for the systems, evoking the menacing "big iron" boxes of rivals like International Business Machines Corp. It plans a broad rollout in a few weeks. Vows chief executive officer Michael Dell: "We will do the same thing we've done in servers and workstations by bringing more realistic pricing to the market."

Meanwhile, Sony Corp. showed more pricing realism as well. Though the company's 505 SuperSlim notebook computer got lots of attention at the show, its two-year-old home-PC operation finally joined the rest of the industry with sharply cheaper systems. Previously, Sony concentrated on PCs priced over $1,700. Now it has three models below that price, including one at $999 and a $1,299 unit with an advanced DVD drive.

*ÿ*ÿ*
Elsewhere at PC Expo, Compaq Computer Corp. takes the prize for the most bizarre exhibit. Just in time to celebrate its recent takeover of Digital Equipment Corp., the Houston computer maker is staging a song-and-acrobatics piece meant to depict the "new world of computing." As dry-ice smoke fills the stage and vaguely Indian-sounding music booms, a troupe wearing Buck Rogers-style helmets and skin-tight costumes made of fur, silver lame and sequins writhes and somersaults. The connection between the Star Trek-meets-Vegas act and computing isn't immediately obvious.

*ÿ*ÿ*
Heading West: PC Expo, which has grown into one of the industry's biggest gatherings of corporate buyers and sellers, plans to announce Thursday that it is expanding from New York to San Francisco. The West Coast version is expected to begin next April.

Show officials say the expansion after 16 years in New York is aimed at enticing more corporate buyers from the West. "Our audiences are so regional that it makes sense to start a new show," says Laura McQuaid, show director of PC Expo, which is produced by Miller Freeman Inc., a San Francisco-based unit of Britain's United News and Media PLC. The move comes as computer trade shows continue to proliferate with the industry's growth. The Comdex extravaganza in Las Vegas draws more than 200,000 people each fall. PC Expo's crowd this week is estimated at 100,000.

How Desperate are Silicon Valley companies for programmers? Well, Oracle Corp. has been promoting its recruiting message with a 20-foot billboard atop a flatbed trailer, with an ice cream truck bringing up the rear. The duo has been driving up and down Silicon Valley's two major highways, pulling into parking lots near software startups that employ the kind of talent Oracle is after. The company, which is trying to staff up to boost its software for automating functions like sales and marketing, isn't saying how many people are coming out to grab the free treats. But says Senior Vice President Nimish Mehta, "We've ordered 10,000 ice cream sandwiches and we'll buy more if necessary."

*ÿ*ÿ*
Microsoft Corp. didn't get everything it wanted in this week's deal with Road Runner, the high-speed Internet access service of Time Warner Inc. and MediaOne Group. Microsoft put in $212.5 million for a 10% stake in the cable joint venture, as did Compaq. But the cable industry remains wary of giving Microsoft too big a role. People familiar with the negotiations say the cable companies refused Microsoft's request for a commitment to use Microsoft's Windows CE operating system and its WebTV technology in their digital set-top boxes. In turn, Microsoft, which is laying bets on other technologies including souped-up phone lines and satellites, brushed aside a suggestion from the cable companies that Road Runner be its exclusive investment in high-speed Internet access. Microsoft got "preferred provider" status, which means it would have an edge over other suppliers as long as its technology fits Road Runner's specifications -- which Microsoft will help define.

Getting new legs? Visitors to Unisys Corp.'s bucolic headquarters near Philadelphia can't help but notice an odd assortment of three-legged stools. Employees even sport little brass pins that look like stools usually seen at kitchen counters. The reason? On his second day on the job last fall, Chairman Lawrence Weinbach told the troops in a telecast how customers, employees and reputation are like three legs of a stool. If one is weak, he said, the whole company is unstable. Unisys then sent out pins to all employees.

CABLE AND WIRELESS dropped a breach of contract lawsuit it filed against MCI COMMUNICATIONS but said the two companies remain in discussions. Regulators later said that divestiture was not enough to win approval for MCI's planned merger with WORLDCOM and MCI is preparing to sell additional assets. European and U.S. regulators are expected to seek additional concessions to ensure the combined MCI-WorldCom would not dominate the Internet business. The Senate Wednesday night killed the tobacco bill on procedural grounds after a month of bitter but inconclusive debate. The vote was 53-46, seven short of the 60 that bill sponsor John McCain, an Arizona Republican, would have needed for the last-ditch effort to keep his legislation alive. The vote was the second in a complicated two-part procedural move to get the bill off the floor, allowing the Senate to go on to other business after the month-long stalemate. Technically, the Senate sent the bill back to McCain's Commerce Committee, but McCain himself said that was tantamount to killing it. GE Medical Systems, a unit of GENERAL ELECTRIC CO, said that it formed a marketing alliance with IMATRON INC to distribute a cardiac scanner, the Imatron C-150 Ultrafast CT scanner, throughout the United States and Canada. The companies said that Astra Merck's business will be combined with Astra's wholly owned subsidiary Astra USA Inc. in a new U.S. limited partnership, named Astra Pharmaceuticals LP, over which Astra will have management control as the general partner. Merck said the agreement is expected to close July 1. The deal gives Astra the right to buy out Merck's stake in 2008 for no less than $4.4 billion. (Reuters 08:50 AM ET 06/19/98)

The exact percentage was not disclosed.
