Dayton Mining Shareholders Elect New Slate of Directors

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1998--Dayton Mining(AMEX:DAY - news; TSE:DAY. - news) Dayton Mining Corporation (''Dayton'') (AMEX, TSE: symbol DAY) announced that at its annual meeting held today in Toronto a slate of nominees proposed by Manchester Securities Corp. was elected to the board of directors of the Company. The directors elected are William H. Myckatyn, Catherine A. McLeod-Seltzer, James E. Askew, David K. Fagin, Douglas D. Donald, Paul M. Blythe and Herman J. Wilton-Siegel. The slate was supported by approximately 67 percent of the shares of the Company voted at the meeting.

In addition at a meeting of the directors held immediately after the annual meeting, Bill Myckatyn was elected Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company. Mr. Myckatyn was previously President and Chief Executive Officer and a director of Princeton Mining Corporation from February 1997 to April 1998, and President and Chief Executive Officer and a director of Gibraltar Mines Limited from July 1993 to October 1996. Mr. Myckatyn is presently a mining consultant and a director of Pacific Rim Mining Corp.

At this meeting the board of directors determined that its first priority during the remainder of 1998 was to develop a strategic plan based on an assessment of the current operating performance of the Andacollo mine and prospects for enhanced recovery and a consideration of the strategic options available to the Company. Mr. Myckatyn will assume operating responsibilities immediately and lead the development of the strategic plan for Dayton.
