It happens all the time. Stop and limit orders are out there for the world to see. If a MM wants to clear the table of all of these orders, he can rachet the price up and down to take everyone out. Check out the price movement in XCIT near the close today; a lot of short limit orders were cleared out.

Actually I do. If the price is hovering so close to my stop loss
price, I think something is wrong and I might as well get out of
it. Also my work does not allow me to monitor stock prices closely
enough to put "mental stop orders" and implement them.
