More Doctors Check Genes To Prevent Bad Drug Effects

All doctors may soon give simple genetic tests before they write a prescription to make sure that the drug will actually work. They'll also be able to see if a patient will be one of the unlucky ones to suffer a serious side effect. The National Institutes of Health is launching a $30 million program to help drug companies find this information. The first patients to be checked will be women taking oral contraceptives and Alzheimer's patients.
