.....Cowpland, on hand for the various announcements, including Wednesday's press conference with Sybase, arrived at the events brandishing some heartening figures from market survey company PC Data.

The data, culled from a survey of retail stores, show that Corel's WordPerfect Suite 8 has climbed steadily in market share to hit 24.7 percent in April compared to 2.3 percent for Lotus SmartSuite and 72.9 percent for Microsoft Office.

Cowpland acknowledged the figures were for stand-alone software sales in a selection of retail stores, and that data including bundled software would bring the WordPerfect share down to a fraction of the retail share.

"But it's the stand-alone data that counts, because that's real money that people are spending," Cowpland told a group of IDG editors at a midweek meeting here. "With bundled software, you're just getting it for free."

If Corel keeps up its current retail sales it can sell about a million copies of the suite in a year, he said.
