michael,

Don't expect Compaq to move out of the current range until the fall/winter unless the market decides to go on a serious tear this summer and CPQ goes along for the ride. Last week, Compaq had a meeting with analysts and guided them earnings wise for the remainder of 1998. According to CPQ, this quarter will be break even, 3rd quarter below current estimates, and 4th quarter a possible upside surprise. Several firms revised earnings downwards last week after the meeting and was already posted on this thread. Cowen & Co. just took longer to revise estimates than the others. IMO, no big deal.

BTW, HWP got downgraded because they do approximately 20% of their business in Asia and we all know what's going on over there. IBM is also getting hammered over there. Expect CPQ to get sucked down with HWP's / IBM's bad news due to Asia for the next few months even though they have less exposure in the region. IMO, if people have the opportunity, get out of CPQ into better plays until the fall, and jump back in when this fruit is ripe.

Regards,
Caisson
