Intel, Seagate, UMC Group Join VSI Alliance
Nine New Members in May Raise Total to Over 180 Worldwide
Elections Underway for New Steering Working Group Members

Wednesday June 17, 4:14 pm Eastern Time

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 17, 1998--The Virtual Socket Interface Alliance (VSIA) today announced that Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news], Seagate Technology and UMC Group were among nine companies that joined its roster during May.

Worldwide membership now totals more than 180 companies representing all segments of the system-chip industry. The alliance also announced that it is currently conducting elections for five steering working group (SWG) member seats that will complete their two-year term in September. Many of the SWG members whose term will expire are running to be reelected.

The VSI Alliance, formed in September 1996 to accelerate the growth of the system-chip market by defining and developing open technical standards for the exchange of virtual components, has made progress toward its goals and has publicly released its first set of specifications. The specifications can be accessed and downloaded from VSIA's website: vsi.org.

''Our newest members reflect both the geographic and industry segment range of our overall membership,'' said Douglas Fairbairn, VSIA president. ''As we grow stronger in our diversity and size, we are able to address new and exciting system-chip industry challenges.''

New members in May include: Ambit Design Systems (Austin, TX); ChipIdea Microelectronics, Ltd. (Oeiras, Portugal); Frontier Design, Inc. (Leuven, Belgium); LEDA S.A. (Melan, France); Intel Corp. (Chandler, AZ); Seagate Technology (Scotts Valley, CA); SmartSand, Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA); Taveren Technology, Inc. (Austin, TX); and UMC Group (Sunnyvale, CA.)

Elections for New SWG Members

At the same time, the alliance announced that elections are underway for five SWG member seats. Five SWG members will complete their two-year term this September and must be reelected to maintain their seat on VSIA's steering committee. All VSIA members, including the SWG members whose term will expire, are eligible to run for elections by declaring their candidacy and getting five seconds from VSIA members. All candidates' names and their seconds must be received by June 20.

VSIA members will vote for the SWG member nominees from June 27 through August 1. The elected SWG members will begin their two-year term on September 1. VSIA members can access detailed information on the elections and forms for casting their vote from VSIA's website: vsi.org.

The SWG members whose terms are expiring are Alcatel, Cadence Design Systems, Sony, Synopsys, and Toshiba.

''The SWG members have provided crucial leadership and direction for VSIA during their term, and many of them are running to be reelected,'' said Fairbairn. ''Their work has resulted not only in releasing our first standards, but in an organization well positioned to serve the system-chip industry in the years to come.''

New SWG members will join the six others, whose terms run for another year. These are: ARM, Altera, Fujitsu, Mentor Graphics, Nokia Mobile Phones, and Nortel Semiconductors.

About the VSI Alliance

The VSI Alliance is an open organization that includes representatives from all segments of the system-chip industry: Electronic Design Automation (EDA), IP providers, semiconductor vendors and system companies. Its goal is to accelerate the growth of the system-chip market by developing open technical standards to enable the mix-and-match of virtual components exchanged on an intra- and inter-company basis.

The VSI Alliance is aggressively soliciting wide industry participation. Membership is open to any corporation with an interest in the development and promotion of open standards used in the design of system chips. For more information, visit the VSI Alliance web site at www.vsi.org, or email to info@vsi.org.
