Sid, the Atlantic Monthly article was an eye opener for me. For the
first time I have a glimmer of understanding. One statement is
reassuring:

Japan's foreign
holdings cannot be brought home without depressing its
customers' economies, thus crippling the export industries that
keep the Japanese in work.
