A BGA package is intended to solder directly to the MB if I'm not mistaken so there will likely not be any socket. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

How many people are upgrading their K6 CPUs to K6-2 CPUs?

NOT MANY!

The K6 PCs don't generally have the 2.2 volt Vcc, they would be STUCK with a 66 MHz clock instead of 100 MHz FSB, and the memory system would still be stuck with slow cache and main memory.

So, by your reasoning, the K6-2 is also a failure.
