"PC WEEK and ZD Market Intelligence Identify Companies on the Technology 'Fast Track'
08:17 a.m. Jun 17, 1998 Eastern
MEDFORD, Mass., June 17/PRNewswire/-- PC WEEK, The Nation's IT Newsweekly from Ziff-Davis(NYSE: ZD), today published the results of the "Fast Track 500" in a special supplement. Produced in collaboration with ZD Market Intelligence, this annual report delivers a clear picture from inside one of the most significant revolutions ever to hit the business world-- the internet. Revolutions happen fast. Sometimes they happen so fast that it's hard to know what to adopt and how fast to adapt. PC WEEK ranks the top 500 most technologically innovative corporations on the basis of how successfully they are using the Internet, Intranets, and Extranets in their businesses.
"This year we decided to focus 'Fast Track' on the epicenter of IT innovation today; the Internet," said Eric Lundquist, Editor and Chief of PC WEEK. "We hit the jackpot. We found the 500 corporations that are doing the most with intranets, extranets, and e-commerce. What's more, we drilled down to uncover details about the return on their Internet investments and to learn about their plans for the future. You can't get this kind of information anywhere else."
Some of the findings about "Fast Track 500" companies include:
*Over half will increase spending by 50 percent or more on Internet technology -- particularly on intranets and electronic commerce.
*They are very satisfied with their overall Internet investments, with return on Intranet investments ranking highest, followed by extranet and e-commerce investments.
*They are rapidly improving their intranets and extranets, replacing static information display with strategic functionality. Most plan to link intranets with their data-warehouse applications, and most plan to allow partners and customers to execute transactions on their extranets.
*More than a quarter are already executing transactions over their extranets.
*More than a third currently send voice, video, or other multimedia over their intranets.
*Half have Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software running on their intranets."
"The 'Fast Track 500' pinpoints those leading-edge companies that are using the Internet both strategically and tactically," said Stan Schatt, Ph.D., Vice President, Research, ZD Market Intelligence. "These companies are a technologically elite group that is using Internet technology to solve real business problems."
To identify the "Fast Track 500" companies, PC WEEK worked with ZD Market Intelligence, a leading source of fact-based information on the computer and communication industries, to develop a methodology that uses specific internet technologies as indicators to rank the most innovative companies. Indicators included items such as intranet penetration, intranet access to data-warehouse or operational systems, deployment of e-commerce applications, deployment of internally developed Java apps, and dedicated web-server MIPS.
"The audience that cares deeply about the issues raised by the 'Fast Track' study is also the audience that our advertisers absolutely need to reach," said John Federman, Publisher of PC WEEK. "These companies are looking for specific solutions that will work
today, and they're ready to translate the need for a specific technology into the need for a specific product. PC WEEK has identified both the products and the strategies that are making these companies competitive in today's market place."
According to PC WEEK's "Fast Track 500" list, the 20 most technologically innovative companies in the country are:
1. Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., Nashville, TN 2. Lockheed Martin Corp., Bethesda, MD 3. General Electric Co, Fairfield CT 4. Raytheon Co., Lexington, MA 5. Cox Enterprises Inc., Atlanta, GA 6.
