>>>I think the best combination for PDAs is a pen AND voice interface. Intel has a chip named StrongArm which is designed to support those kind of application. What is needed though is a voice recognition engine that encompasses the limitations that today's HMM technology has, i.e. lack of speaker independence, lack of natural language
understanding capabilities and lack of scalability.<<<

At the same time that speaker independence is a problem to solve Re:voice recognition accuracy, it also offers a chance to "fingerprint" the voice giving a password kind of protection. A product this small would be extremely easy to steal, I would want some safeguards built in to make a stolen "voice PDA" unusable.

>>>noise sensitivity,<<<

Right now, I'd think that a "voice PDA" would be much like an early
SONY Walkman. That is, a rather bulky unit with attached headphone and
microphone. A headset with Andrea's noise cancellation technology would reduce the PDA's sensitivity to noise. Much later down the road, PDA's would be spoken to directly without the need for a headset.

>>>My best guess is that within the next 12 months we should hear
something in this respect.<<<

Who do you think would intro this product? 3COM? or another unexpected company?? I"m surprised that Intel has not tried to
bring out a product like this by themselves. C'mon Intel don't be chicken shit. Oh well, i guess SONY will come up with one someday.
