HONG KONG, June 18 (Reuters) - Legend Holdings Ltd said it made net profit of HK$73.27 million in the year to March 31 after a loss of HK$48.64 million a year earlier, and attributed the turnaround mainly to the acquisition of three computer-related businesses from its parent company.

The company said the total units of "Legend" brand personal computers sold accounted for a 12.7 percent market share in China in the first quarter of 1998. This was followed by International Business Machines Corp IBM which had a 6.9 percent share of the market, Hewlett Packard HWP with 5.4 percent and Compaq Computer Corp CPQ with 4.4 percent.

As a sole distributor of Toshiba Corp notebook computers, Legend said it expected to see the market share of Toshiba notebook computers to increase to more than 30 percent in 1998 from 27.4 percent in 1997.

"We expect to see some 30 to 35 percent growth in revenue in the area of systems integration," Ma said.

The number of printers sold under the "Legend" brand accounted for 8.8 percent of the market share in China in 1997.

Panasonic printers had a 5.2 percent share, Cannon 3.4 percent and Epson 2.8 percent, Legend said.

Liu said the Chinese market would remain Legend's main focus in 1998. "Sales of personal computers in China are expected to grow at an annual compound growth rate of 40 percent with home computers being the fastest growing market," he said.

Ma said the company might set up manufacturing joint ventures with international companies to produce software and other computer-related products in 1998 but no concrete plans had yet been made.
