Unter Druck steht derzeit die Aktie der kanadischen Ballard Power (WKN 890 704). Das
liegt nicht nur an der Konsolidierung an den nordamerikanischen B”rsen, von der
Technologiewerte regelm„áig h„rter betroffen sind. Ausl”ser war auch, daá Finanzcef
Mossadiq Umedaly nach achtj„hriger Vorstandsmitgliedschaft seinen Rckzug aus dem
Unternehmen angekndigt hat.

Sein Nachfolger wird der bisherige Treasurer Paul Lancaster. Fr Kontinuit„t im
Management ist also gesorgt. Und das ist auch notwendig, denn Ballard befindet sich gerade
in der Phase des Wandels vom Technologieentwickler zum produzierenden
Industrieunternehmen.

Der Hersteller von Brennstoffzellen hat 1997 die Kommerzialisierung seiner Technik
vorangetrieben. Im Fokus der Bemhungen standen dabei strategische Allianzen, um die
von Ballard gelieferten Komponenten in Produkte einzubinden: Auf dem Sektor
Kraftwerke sind das der US-Versorger GPU International und GEC Alsthom, im
Kfz-Bereich wurden Joint ventures mit Ford und Daimler-Benz vereinbart, die zudem mit
20% an Ballard beteiligt sind.

Die ersten Null-Emissions-Busse werden in Chicago auf ihre Alltagstauglichkeit geprft.
Ballard-Chef Firoz Rasul bezeichnet die Tests als ausgesprochen erfolgreich. Im
Kraftwerksbau haben die Kanadier Bestellungen fr 9 Versuchsanlagen, darunter eine aus
Deutschland.

Bis die Brennstoffzellen den Wettbewerb mit den herk”mmlichen Elektro- und
Verbrennungsmotoren aufnehmen k”nnen, werden aber noch mindestens drei Jahre ins
Land gehen. Das, so Rasul, liege nicht an der Technik, sondern in erster Linie am Preis.
Bei der Materialauswahl wurden bereits deutliche Fortschritte erzielt, so wurden 1997 die
Herstellungskosten um 50% gedrckt. Weiteres Sparpotential liegt in der Optimierung
des Produktionsprozesses. Konkurrenzf„hig wird die Brennstoffzelle aber erst, wenn sie
in groáer Stckzahl vom Band l„uft.

Das Marktpotential ist enorm. Bisher hat sich Ballard auf Kraftwerke, mobile Generatoren
und Kraftfahrzeuge spezialisiert, die Brennstoffzelle ist aber auch als Antrieb von Schiffen,
Eisenbahnen, Flugzeugen und sogar Handys denkbar.

Die langfristigen Aussichten von Ballard sind l durch den technischen Vorsprung des

Neutrons to punch holes in plastic??? Wao!

I think that's another good example of Physics in Wonderland! What happened to scientists these days? Does this guy have a formal university degree? Did he really pass his physics 101 exam? Neutrons, I'm afraid, cannot punch holes. Neutrons simply pass through the inter-molecular spacings because they're not subjected to any electrostatic forces inside materials. On the other hand, if somebody believes that protons will pass through objects as easily as neutrons do, then he/she DEFINITELY didn't pass physics 101! Protons encounter enormous electrostatic forces inside materials, and therefore cannot travel (except in certain materials that offer high proton mobility, as I posted earlier).

I'll be interested to hear some more of these pleasant stories. It creates an atmosphere of fun.
