Mike,

I've had the same impression. China has had an export surplus with Japan but is now concerned that the lower yen would reduce or even turn it into a deficit. As far as the US and Europe are concerned, I believe you are right about them not so much competing with Japan, but with South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, etc.

IMO - The biggest factor is everyone in Asia is in limbo, not knowing what's going to happen next. It's very frustrating for the businessmen because they have NO control over the things that are happening to them. I would think that they are all tightening their belts, cutting back, and trying to just wait it out in hopes that it doesn't last too long. Why spend money to make a product if your currency is going to be devalued next week? Why place a big order for a product if you might be able to get it cheaper next week?

FWIW,
Ron
