UP 1-3/16 TO 25-1/2 B.A.T INDUSTRIES INC ADRS UP 11/16 TO 19-13/16 GENERAL CIGAR UP 3/4 OR 7.6 PCT TO 10-5/8 Shares of tobacco and cigar firms jumped after the landmark McCain tobacco bill was killed in the U.S. Senate. The bill had sought to seek an industry-wide settlement in the neighborhood of $500 to $850 billion. Philip Morris, up five percent, was the most active stock on the New York Stock Exchange and RJR was heavily traded. General Cigar Holdings Inc was one of the top percent gainers on the NYSE, up more than seven percent. A Standard & Poor's Index of tobacco stocks was the biggest industry winner early in the session, ringing up gains of nearly five percent. --------------------------- INFOSEEK CORP. UP 2-5/8 TO 37-1/8 WALT DISNEY CO. OFF 5/16 TO 114 Infoseek shares jumped after media giant Walt Disney Co. agreed to acquire a 43 percent stake in the firm for $70 million. InfoSeek will also receive Disney's stake in Starwave, an Internet news and entertainment venture founded by Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen. Infoseek was the second most active stock on the Nasdaq. The deal lifted other Internet stocks in heavy trading on speculation that other rival Internet names would link up with media partners. YAHOO! INC. UP 4-7/8 TO 135-1/2 LYCOS INC. ROSE 3-1/2 TO 63 NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS UP 1-/78 TO 27-1/4 AMERICA ONLINE UP 2-7/16 TO 96-1/4 --------------------------- UNIGRAPHICS SOLUTIONS INC UP 1/2 TO 14-1/2 The software company was the third most active NYSE stock after its $70 million IPO, posting slight gains even after paring back the number of shares sold in the offering. -------------------------- ORACLE CORP UP 10/16 TO 24-15/16 Oracle was the most active stock on the Nasdaq after its said fiscal fourth quarter earning beat Wall Street estimates by three cents a share. Earnings for the quarter were $0.41 a share, beating Wall Street consensus estimates of $0.38 and quarterly profits of $0.36 for the corresponding quarter last year. Future earnings estimates were trimmed by Salomon Smith Barney. ----------------------- MCDONALDS CORP UP 2-3/16 TO 67-5/8 Shares of the fast food restauranteur gained about two percent in heavy trading after Goldman Sach raised the Dow component's rating to market outperform from market perform. ---------------- GOODMARK FOODS INC JUMPS 5 OR 20 PCT TO 29-1/2 CONAGRA INC SLIPS 4/15 TO 32-5/16 Goodmark, the maker of Slim Jim meat snacks, surged after it agreed to be bought by ConAgra for $30 a share in stock. Goodmark was a top Nasdaq gainer. ConAgra will issue 7.26 million new shares for GoodMark's 7.2 million shares. ----------------------- ARCO CHEMICAL CO UP 5-9/16 OR 11 PCT TO 56-1/8 LYONDELL PETROCHEMICAL CO OFF 9/16 TO 27-3/16 ARCO shares climbed after it confirmed it was in talks to sell the last of its chemical businesses to Lyondell Petrochemical, leaving ARCO to focus on its oil and gas operations. ARCO spun off Lyondell it a 1989 initial public offering. -------------------------- EARNINGS WARNINGS: YAHOO! INC OFF 5/8 TO 130 Yahoo! shed its earlier gains and moved lower in heavy trading after it said it expects losses in the second quarter and for the year due to a charge from its acquisition of ViaWeb in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. ------------------------- EVOLVING SYSTEMS OFF 40 PCT OR 6-1/16 TO 9-3/16 The telecom support company was the top Nasdaq loser early in the session after it warned of disappointing revenue and profits and a charge in the second quarter because of slower sales cycles and trouble getting final closure to some contracts. --------------- STAR BUFFET OFF 5 OR 39 PCT TO 7-3/4 Star Buffet Inc. plunged after it said it would be a less aggressive acquisitor of Buffet restaurants, which had been the core of its its growth strategy. Both Equitable Securities and Everen cut future profit estimates for the company. -----------------
