#1 in which areas? I think Dell will be #1 in several segments a lot sooner than 2001, maybe more like late 1998. They could do it in laptops and they could do it in workstations (although the combination of DEC and CPQ workstation presence makes the second one less likely in 1998). But there is no prospect that they will be #1 in segments like multivendor storage, since they have no planned or current offerings in that area (unless you count the DG storage deal which looks to me like a defensive OEM play). There are lots of areas where Dell just does not have an advantage, and they have shown great skill at not wasting money and talent on markets where they can't win big.

I would be interested in your assessment (or others) on what segments Dell will move to dominate, and why.
