Japan and China have never liked each other going back at least 1000 years. China is out competing Japan using the same kind of coolie neo-mercantilism that Japan used on us. The future war will come from the seeds of the past, but the incidents that will escalate mere mutual disdain into a hot war will be territorial issues in the Sea of Japan. In the future Japan will have a more substantial military capability than they have had since WW II. Similarly with China. Whenever two nations are at odds with each other and have a burgeoning military capability, they tend to test each other and often end up provoking the very thing the military expansion was intended to preclude. Almost every nation in the Eastern Hemisphere is squaring off with some adversary. Those that can't find anybody to fight will join others for joint protection.

As far as the US getting involved, it isn't possible. These nations are too rich and capable on every level for us to challenge their sovereignty. We can only try to advise them as they become the powers of the 21st century.
