I have no idea what I am talking about but you might see Cisco buy TLAB/CIEN. That would kind of even the playing field with Lucent. I am not sure what Cisco has in the fiber optics field.

I am not sure how the market would react if Ericison bought Ascend. I think the market would react positively if Lucent bought Ascend. But since Ericision is a foreign company I don't know.

Ascend will be in a tough spot if Ericison offers $65 share. Do you take the money or wait and hope that your stock holds up and hope that Lucent buys you?

I started to short ERICY this morning. I didn't. But I did pick up a few extra shares of Ascend for $49.

I've thought for a long time that TLAB would be a great addition to
CSCO but see no way this would happen.

Sweden's Ericsson looking at U.S. networking cos
June 19, 1998 10:04 AM

Ericsson did not rule out the possibility it could pursue a large acquisition, but said it is currently looking at small to mid-sized networking firms worth "several hundred million dollars."

"We're looking at small and mid-sized companies. We would acquire them for their expertise in this area...it would be easier to incorporate them into the company than a larger acquisition," Egan said.

Ericsson's interest in data networking firms follows an agreement by rival telecommunications equipment maker Northern Telecom Ltd (NT) to buy Bay Networks Inc (BAY). Other deals in recent weeks include French telecoms giant Alcatel Alsthom (ALA) buying Dallas-based DSC Communications Corp. (DIGI) and Tellabs Inc.'s (TLAB) deal to buy CIENA Corp (CIEN).

Companies are seeking partners because the technology barriers that had divided phone equipment and computer network suppliers have collapsed as the Internet has blurred the distinctions between internal office systems and long-distance phone networks.
