Bill Gates sees continuing growth in PC industry

TAIPEI, June 19 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp
chairman Bill Gates said on Friday he was optimistic about the
continuing growth of the personal computer industry despite
Asia's financial crisis.
"In terms of the worldwide PC market, this was another year
of strong growth, (with) units growing well over 15 percent,
that's a very gratifying result when you have 90 million units
a year being sold," Gates said in a news conference in Taipei.
Gates said some Asian economies had been in a down cycle,
but this would not affect world market growth for personal
computers.
"Every year, some economy is going to be down and PC sales
in that country will be off," Gates, who was on a one-day visit
to Taiwan, said.
Gates had a hectic visit during which he met Taiwan
President Lee Teng-hui, gave a speech on the importance of
building the computer "digital nervous system" for the next
century, and said Microsoft would set up a solution centre in
Taiwan.
"We picked Taiwan (to build the centre) because of the
progress here," Gates said.
The centre -- the Dedicated System Solution Centre for the
Asia Region in Taiwan -- reaffirms Microsoft's commitment to
the Taiwan's information technology industry, Gates said.
The solution centre will include knowledge transfer
facilities designed to address the growing interest in
Microsoft Windows CE and Windows NT for dedicated devices
ranging from consumer devices to point of sales systems, Gates
added.
Microsoft will also work with Taiwan to build a laboratory
on the island to develop internet applications.
"The Windows DNA Application Development Lab will provide
technical support and software licensing to local software
developers," Gates said.
During his day-long stay, Gates also helped promote
Taiwan's products through a film commercial.

Contest update <http://townlet.com/sowbug/contest/>:

We're winding this quarter down and I'm setting up the new quarter's contest. As many of you know, eom f.k.a. Pete B. Roker kindly donated a gorgeous print to this quarter's winner. Do any of you have hobby-begotten curios, extra material possessions, or unwanted cash that you'd like to offer as a prize to next quarter's winner? It's 49% fun, 49% educational, and 2% about the prize, so it's ok if the winner just gets bragging rights, but something to shoot for would be nice.

Thanks in advance.
