[Qwest CEO: Would Consider MCI, WorldCom Internet Assets Buy]

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Qwest Communications International Inc. would consider buying the Internet assets of MCI Communications Corp., but it isn't going to get into a bidding war over them, said Chairman and Chief Executive Joseph Nacchio.

The communication-services company could use the telecom giant's infrastructure to build out its own Internet operations, Nacchio said Thursday in an interview with CNBC, but it wouldn't be heartbroken if Qwest simply had to build its own.

"If these (assets) were attractive and priced right, these would be something we would look at," Nacchio said.

As reported, MCI's Internet assets could potentially come up for sale as part of a deal with U.S. and European regulators to clear the merger of MCI and WorldCom Inc.

Nacchio said he has spoken with officials at WorldCom about the sale of MCI's Internet operations, but "I'm sure they've spoken to a lot of other people also," he hedged.

Still, the chief executive admitted that the assets could be "very synergistic" with Qwest's existing operations, and that acquisition is a viable way for the company to expand its Internet business.

C&W in talks with MCI, Yahoo News. I don't think MCI wants to give QWST a chance at their internet assets.
