'Time running out for industry
to deal with Millennium Bug

By Seafarer

KAY, Seafarer puts his hands up. He did not realise, by a long
way, just how serious the millennium bug problem might be. Well,
after attending one of the International Group's one-day conferences held
around the world in the past few days, he does now.

"Might" is the operative word. As the chairman of Meeting the Challenge
of the year 2000 in the Shipping and Transport Industry, Robin Guenier,
said: "Nobody knows what will happen on Jan 1, 2000." But there clearly
is the potential for an awful lot to go wrong.

Seafarer doubts that he was alone in thinking the experts who have been
sounding the alarms in recent months were hyping it up a bit. As far as the
shipping industry was concerned, he thought, perhaps it could be
inconvenient, perhaps ships would have to do things the old fashioned way
for a while if modern gadgets failed.

To an extent this could be the case. On older ships it may be possible to
identify the few devices, typically working in isolation, that use embedded
chips or computers. And probably it will be possible to work around things
if there are equipment failures on such vessels. The situation is very
different on more modern ships. On one fairly typical 16-year-old tanker
there were 1,800 sub-assemblies to be checked of which 122 were found
to be suspect.

As grandma Pink used to say, "If it is too hot, get out of the kitchen."
