Parallels between IBM then and Intel now

How true Burt. The paranoia prevents Intel from having the pressure of investors interested in seeing the company improve its image and prevents anyone inside from being brave enough to stand up and suggest another direction. Intel is as inflexible as IBM was in its white shirt blue suit days. The thinking is straightjacketed. They have just made their PC Junior --- Celery mistake and they are behaving far worse as a monopoly than IBM did in the late 70's and early 80's.

Burt - Re: "Just some thoughts."

Thanks for your thoughts and comparisons between IBM and its detractors and Intel and its current round of detractors.

Yoor observations are quite right. The AMD's and Cyrix's are like shooting stars. They have a momentary flash of light and then they grow dull.

They put forth an occasional ADEQUATE device, but they will never displace Intel with ADEQUATE devices. They need to deliver BLOW-AWAY devices to displace Intel, but instead, they are having difficulty delivering ADEQUATE copies.

Meanwhile, they are burning money.

Eventually, their flames will flicker for the final time.

Paul

Burt,

Re: "In retrospect, betting against IBM was certifiably DUMB for over 30 years."

Excellent post, Burt ... It is often very good to look at the past and
learn for the future. I have to agree that with Intel's excellent process
technology, manufacturing and product strategies, I am very confident that
Intel will continue to dominate its competitors. I am also glad to see
Intel "diversifying" into the high end processors for servers and workstations.
With the need for high speed SRAM, these products will be very, very high
margin.

Regards,
Yousef

Burt- Burroughs stock went from 22 in 1966 to 344 in 1969.
