Re: Kanellos' news.com article on Otellini's announcements

Complete baloney. Convergence, not divergence is the long run objective. Do you think people enjoy having to tote around separate and incompatible:

1. Alpha Pager
2. Cellular phone
3. PDA
4. Voice note recorder/tape recorder

The portable device of the future combines all these functions into one package, with a general-purpose CPU that allows it to do many other non-killer but still-useful things.

What Otellini is talking about amounts to dismantling the PC so that you'll have separate pager/phone/pda/recorder etc. on your desktop. Uh huh. Dvorak wrote a good piece about this:

zdnet.com
The entire business that Intel is in is built around the idea that a general-purpose CPU--because of its versatility and programmability--can do any chore.

I was a strong supporter of the MediaGX concept until someone pointed out that because there are numerous subsystems on the same chip, all of them will have to evolve at the same rate as discrete components or the MediaGX will be left behind.

God bless,
