Went to PC expo. Spoke with iom, syqt, & castlewood. No new announcements from any of the companies. syqt employees said syjet will be upgraded, quest is ready and will be upgraded to 10 & 20 Gig!! but when they dont know. Nice professional exposition about half the size of ioms. felt very positive about the company when i left. iom had ferocious # of oem machines with the zip drive installed. terriffic displays. they are the marketing masters. spoke with who impressed me as a big wig in castlewood. he said they will release the orb in late july, ide only. newer versions to be released monthly. booth display was pathetic. so where is the cash from japan? if they were really ready why would they miss a great opportunity like pcexpo to toot their horn. for that reason i doubt they will have it ready by then, but stranger things have been known to happen. if they do, lets hope syqt releases and mfgs. the quest the next day! syqt's distribution channels are maturing rapidly so we should probably get a similar product on the shelves before them, and it will probably take castlewood a good few months to reach retail saturation (but then there is always the internet sales channel) Name recognition is a big part of this game. look at the # of zips selling in the face of far superior and cheaper competition. caleb from colorado is releasing in sept a 144meg floppy downwardly compatible to even 720K floppies for $79 and $10 for the media. if we see it it will be a zip killer. well maybe, remember their lead. their display was much more professional and about 4 times the size of castlewoods. if they produce this product for this price i will buy 100 drives for my job alone. bye bye 1.44 drives. sony 200meg floppy drive. nice looking product. $200 retail & $10 for the floppies. unlike caleb only compatible down to the 1.44, but who cares. looked at the drive. it has a floppy connector for 1.44 and an ide connector for the hi density media. the drive recognizes which media it has. the display was run by teac. their production will be awesome when they release it in september (i am sorry i dont remember the release date for sure) salesman says they are working on a 400meg version. says their product is inherently cheaper to produce than 3m's imation superdisk because of the high cost of the optics in their drives. sony's are all magnetic and they (and teac) really know how to make them cheap. wait till they see caleb (sorry privately owned... I asked!) imation gorgeous displays, good public response, very professional. what one would expect from 3m. never heard of caleb. will be in for a shock.
