Jim, all: Readware posted on LOR Motley thread that the "handset delay" was a flat misquote of Bernard Schwartz, no ifs, ands, or buts. I see that Valueman and others have alluded to this but just wanted to double confirm.
That said, Mr. Schwartz was also (correctly) quoted recently as saying that handset availability would be the long arm of the tent pole, or words to that effect. Meaning that there is SOME concern over Qualcomm's ability to push enough of these guys out the door and in to the hands of the carriers and then to the final user. There have also been reports that Q is running flat out to get enough of their 'regular' handsets to terrestial wireless users, some of whom have complained about inability to get adequate supplies.
Thus it does seem that this situation is being watched very closely and I suspect that the Q is under big time pressure to ramp up. As we all know, Qualcomm has suffered some manufacturing glitches in prior generations which were acknowledged by senior management at last meeting with security analysts. At the same meeting, management made it very clear that the problems were being resolved and my overall impression was that they were "all over it".
I have to believe that Qualcomm will move heaven and earth to meet their milestones: it would be a huge embarassment if they booted it. I think Jim's friend got it about right on the money--the closer we get to showtime, the more the rumor mill will ignite. Valium anyone? Mike Doyle
