Craig - you're right in that it could generate some trading opportunities, but I think that it calls into question the scenario that these stocks have been soaring on. The question , of course, is whether there are huge profits off in the future somewhere. None of us has a crystal ball, except, apparently, Bill Harmond, but the intense competition I believe will force them all to eat each other alive.
The economics of the business will be key, and I firmly believe that the payoffs will be much lower than previously anticipated.
Last comment - AOL has subscribers feeding it (at the moment, anyway) and that makes a big difference. Yahoo does not.
I don't think AT&T would be wise to plunk down $20 billion. I thought they got rid of all the knuckleheads.

YHOO might cool off for a while, but I don't think you are going to see a big slide.
At least not the kind of slide that won't give you an opportunity to get out.

otoh, it might allow the bears to short it at still very high prices and
ride it down nicely. When I short, I prefer a slow gradual
deflation, while I add to my short as my confidence increases.
But, these stocks are so irrational, and so volatile that the
dude with the fastest draw wins!

Craig, who said AT&T wanted to buy AOL? Totally fabricated rumors, probably started on the Motley Fool Board. It seems we have immediate information, and no knowledge or wisdom. T would never buy AOL,for any price,no reason to,but they might sell access,or some other service to AOL.
AOL will die soon, choked off from its air supply by cable, and the RBOC's not allowing colocation of modems. AOL does not own its infrastructure, and like a hot bar, people will move on to something better.
My bet is with Road Runner, and the cable companies through ATHM choking the shit out of AOL.
Then I expect MCI/Worldcom to triple their rates, and the RBOC's to block access to their lines for ADSL(EDSEL to me).
No on wants AOL, they all want to suck AOL dry, like parasites on a wounded carcass.
