[sonet vendors/fsan] hi s.gekko, a couple of follow-on thoughts... checked some stuff and as of 97, there were basically five major sonet vendors... who together accounted for more than 90% of all sonet equipment sold to date (alphabetical order): alcatel network systems; fujitsu network transmission systems; lucent technologies; nec transmission; and nortel don't know how sdh vendors stack up, but would think the list would probably be similar... so orctf has a major league partner in fujitsu for xdsl/sonet integration... as mentioned previously orctf and fujitsu network communications (fnc) have been working on integration in the onu (optical network unit) for over a year now... from last may: "Fujitsu also presented a glimpse into the next stages of its DSL technology development. In 1998, the company said, it will offer VDSL and SDSL cards that plug right into the FACTR Broadband Access Platform. That integration will enable elimination of the external shelf. "The integration won't replace the 23-inch rack version, but is an add-on," explained Pawan Jaggi, Fujitsu's senior product manager for access planning and management. "This integration is aimed at those carriers who want to provide a fiber-to-the-neighborhood implementation. For carriers who prefer to serve their customers from the central office or a remote terminal, we will continue to offer the rack version." fnc.fujitsu.com and from the recent (may 6) orctf/fujitsu limited strategic alliance for asia and europe press release... "... the two partners will integrate orckit's asymmetrical digital subscriber line (adsl) and very high bit rate digital subscriber line (vdsl) products into fujitsu's optical network units and network termination units in order to provide a full service access network (fsan) or telecom operators..." --- interesting to compare the list of companies testing orctf (as reported in recent globes article) with the list of fsan initiative FTTCab (fiber-to-the-cabinet) members... a remarkable correlation... from globes: "it (orctf vdsl) is being tested in ten companies, among them Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, BT, Bell Canada, NTT of Japan, and Telecom Korea"... prime candidates for the missing four (from previous orctf connections/my list): GTE, Swiss PTT (or Telefonica), Telestra, and Telecom Italia globes.co.il from the fsan website: FTTCab members... DT, France Telecom (FT), BT, Bell Canada, Korea Telecom (KT), GTE, Swiss PTT, Telestra, Telecom Italia (note that ntt is involved in the fsan ftth chapter and on record as interested in vdsl) btlabs1.labs.bt.com sounds to me like orctf/fujitsu are playing by the fsan initiative rules and are therefore on the shortlist for vendors for the fsan initiative FTTCab (vdsl) trials ... which are scheduled (same link as above) "...Individual Telco Trials Jun-Dec 98 (Chapter members compare experience and swap information on supplier equipment performance) Rollout deployment of FSAN Equipment Jan 99 onwards..." seems like the dt/orctf/fujitsu vdsl trial would fall into this schedule... also gte has a vdsl rfp out now which would also seem to fit... (note also, in the globes article referenced: "..Orckit believes the trial runs on VDSL led to the (adsl) contract with GTE...") from a very good article from june this year: "...At GTE, where video services are offered over hybrid fiber/coax networks in California and Florida, the carrier has decided to stop building HFC networks in favor of moving to the VDSL platform, sources say. "We're not ready to discuss details, but we have had a strong vendor response to our (VDSL) RFP and will be announcing our next moves shortly," says a GTE insider, asking not to be named..." cedmagazine.com bye s
