'But of the 1,200 or so companies listed on the ASX, only 60 or 70 had filed
disclosures of their year 2000 readiness, Mr Newman said.

"The suppression of vital information may satisfy the parochial objective of legal
protection but it is harmful to the national Y2K project," he said.

Mr Newman also heads the ederal Government's Year 2000 steering
committee designed to co-ordinate government and industry responses to the
problem.

He said company disclosures must be "detailed and meaningful rather than
simply complying with a standard boiler plate".'
