Whats the speed of your ISP? Using a 56K ISP I get confirmations on NYSE socks almost as fast as Nasdaq stocks.
I am using CyberTrader though.

Jow W: What you're experiencing could be the nature of the specialist.

I sit AT as Superdot and sometimes have the same problems. Any time a stock is on a tear, it seems like the specialist is very slow in reporting. I don't get a confirm, I can't get a cancel and a couple minutes later I get a TLTC (TooLateTooCancel). This is particularly true with a fast mover like TXN or LU.

But, I don't think I've it's ever taken 5 minutes.

Generally though, where you can get a confirmation in just 2-5 secs on NASDAQ, it typically takes 15+ secs for the specialist to get back to you.
