Sony plans 90 pct cut in SRAM chips - media report

TOKYO, June 19 (Reuters) - Sony Corp plans a 90 percent output reduction in static random access memory (SRAM) chips this business year by halting production at a U.S. plant in Texas, Japan's Kyodo news agency reported on Friday.
Kyodo quoted a Sony official as saying the move was aimed at spurring a shift in its chip business away from low-priced products to more value-added ones.

A spokesman for the Japanese electronics giant said he could not immediately confirm the report.

In 1997/98, Sony produced five million SRAM chips a month, mostly low-priced chips used for cellular phones, video games and personal computers, Kyodo said.

Sony has SRAM production plants in Texas and Nagasaki, southern Japan, it said.
