I bought the canister kind and it comes with a HEPA filter built in. I find the HEPA filter doesn't get that clogged because it is secondary to the main filter. The HEPA catches the tiniest bits of dust.

I think they are expensive to replace, though.

Actually, the thing I like about this vacuum is that it doesn't blow dust out the exhaust like my old Hoover Spirit used to whenever the bag was near full.

I empty the canister after each use, so that could explain why I haven't encountered a problem.
