CHICAGO, June 18 (Reuters) - Implied volatility in Internet
company Lycos Inc. options expanded on Thursday after
Walt Disney Co. agreed to buy a 43 percent stake in Web
portal service group Infoseek Corp. .
Volatility for July 61 options rose into the mid-80-percent
area, from an average in the low 80s, traders said.
"They're in the same business and the thinking is that
someone might want a piece of Lycos, but that's pure
speculation," said one trader.
Lycos stock rose 2-1/8 to 61-5/8.
Similarly, takeover talk in Ascend Communications Inc.
was rekindled, driving implied volatility higher, in
the wake of Canada's Northern Telecom Ltd.'s purchase
of the Bay Networks Inc. , traders said.
Volatility for July at-the-money options on Ascend swelled
into the low 50 percent range, up from its average of around 40
percent.
Ascend has been seen as a likely takeover candidate for
months.
The stock advanced 1 to 50-3/8.
