Michael,

I didn't realize that you were techie proficient.

What Norton Utilities actually did was to partially convert the contents of the file access table from 32 bits to 16 bits. One day WIN95 didn't boot up. I ran ScanDisk which showed numerous Registry files as corrupted. We had to reformat and repartition the disk, and then reload WIN95. We loaded up the Seagate backup utility. My plan was to selectively reload the application files from tape to disk. The very first file caused the machine to upchuck. I can't remember if WIN95 gave me the error, or Seagate backup or FirstAid, but it was one of them. At that point, the tape was useless, and I had to reinstall all packages from the original shrink wrap sources, and reapply all patches, data updates, etc... One big pain in the u-know-whut. But it's history now. And I did get my money back from Best Buy on the Norton Utilities. So I just chalked it up to experience.
