The article I was referring to mentioned that Price Protection had been CPQ's biggest supply-chain cost. Applying some of the savings to cut prices even more...they will be "executing" all right. I believe that all the inventory write offs are just about over, so real profits should start coming in...in any event, this quarter's warning is already built into the price, so any channel inventory talk or second quarter earnings (lack of) is yesterday's news. I only mention that because you've shown a fondness for bringing those two topics up in the past. Now's the time to get on board...it's not too late, and it'll save you the grief of listening to everyone telling you "I told you so" a few months from now when CPQ's p/e starts to track 1999's earnings, which will put it's price in the 40's heading up.

Interesting to note how Yhoo is sending up the red flag on earnings today. Everyone expected it was full speed ahead into nothing but black for the Titanic. Oops...there's icebergs out here. They sound gloomy about the longer near term too.

This means that building AltaVista into a major site is very possible if we jump on it since Yhoo is weaker than people thought. Also, with Yhoo's red flag you can bet the others are hurt too.

Jim: Compaq has made money hand over fist for many, many years. They got caught with too much inventory in the channel and are correcting the problem. But you seem to be of the opinion that they have totally forgot how to make money and will never make any again. Is that really how you feel? If so you have to be the most short-sighted person on SI.
